I like Rox-filler ans rox panel, Once you get into rox you just love the speed and power.

The problem is you need to run it for at least a few weeks to discover it's features ( and make it look good)

All the setting are in ~/.config//rox.sourceforge.net/ROX-Filer/

here's my basic setup

screen grab with ffmpeg

screenCapture-no sound

http://www.binrev.com/forums/index.php?app=blog&module=display&section=blog&blogid=5&showentry=123&#comment54

i am always having to look this up. now at least i'll have it here:

ffmpeg -f x11grab -vc theora -s vga -r 24 -b 1200 -g 300 -i :0.0 ~/Videos/screenCapture1.ogv

option by option:

-f x11grab = take video from X...ffmpeg must have been compiled with enable-x11grab included; your distro or version may or may not have this enabled!

-vc = Video Codec...usually you will have ogg theora, xvid, [ff]mpeg (the default), and x264 available

-s = size. see the ffmpeg man page for details; vga is something like 800x600 and there are many other sizes available. know that it starts from the top left corner counts pixels from there.

-r = frame rate. lower frame rate gives smaller file size but looks a little less smooth

-b = bitrate. higher bitrate looks better but makes for a larger file size

-g = GOP size...300 provides a pretty nice looking image without increasing file size too much; it's got one intra frame every...i dunno....300/24 = 12.5 seconds or so.

-i = input...in this case it's :0.0 meaning your main screen. or display. or whatever it's called.

As you can imagine, there are a LOT more options available to you via man ffmpeg. Probably the most notable would be the offset, so if you wanted the capture area to not start at the very top left, you could tell it to, say, go down 10 pixels and over 10 pixels and THEN capture vga-size images, or xga-size images, or whatever.

## this works for me##

ok@debian800:~$ ffmpeg -f x11grab -s 400x300 -r 24 -b 1200 -g 300 -i :0.0 ~/screenCapture.mpg
ok@debian800:~$ ffmpeg -f x11grab -s 400x300 -r 24 -b 1200 -g 300 -t 60 -i :0.0 ~/clive-mplayer-terminator.mpg
ffmpeg -f x11grab -s 1280x1024 -qscale 1 -s 640x480  -r 24 -b 1200 -g 300 -t 60 -i :0.0 ~/screenCapture-scaled-to-640x480-timer-60-no-sound.mpg

## options ##

##option to capture full screen and scale. cpu depending :)
## -s 1280x1024 -qscale 1 -s 640x480

## set record time to 60 seconds
## -t 60

#http://www.elpauer.org/?p=261  ##note: has the off set at +480.200 to move the capture area
#ffmpeg -f x11grab -y -r 12 -s 800x600 -i :0.0+480,200 -vcodec ffv1 -sameq ./out.avi

## the star of the show ## great performance on my old 800mhz ppc ##
ffmpeg -f x11grab -s 1280x1024 -qscale 1 -s 640x480  -r 24 -b 1200 -g 300 -t 60 -i :0.0 ~/screenCapture.mpg

extended dual screen xorg.conf error debian lenny

This is the error is get on my dual screen set-up This maybe due to the apple firmware playing silly buggers or some error in my xorg.conf. Or a bug. As I only needed dual monitors to set-up the LCD conversion I don't care :) It would be nice if it was perfect though, but the machine is used as a media centre (I have no TV) but watch allot of films. This set-up means I can connect my VHS player, DVD's, xvid's as well as HD and networked movies. All played through my big Yamaha amp, Nice.

My "LCD emac" running Debian Lenny

Monitor controls, though I use the remote.

Placement of LCD
LCD fixings

Modifications to frame

This was the tricky bit rewiring the VGA

The build up

Power supply and extra HD holder it failed to boot the other HD! I didn't really need it so removed it later.

Ready for the processor

Internal VGA connector

Mini VGA connector

The mess is hidden :) but easy access and dismantling was required.

Variable fan switch

Final connections power supply switch is on a Velcro pad, s video, analogue video and audio, speakers to amp.

Mini VGA used to test/set-up

Variable fan switch

A new login was choosen as most actions, sessions settings were hidden due to the size of the emac "hole" being slightly small than the screen size

Duplication of the emac screen is "shared on the external" close up

Duplication of the emac screen is "shared on the external"

Debian almost got the dual monitor settings right. emac screen is fine (allowing for the fact that it's 1280x1024 and the emac "hole" is 1280x960) But some duplication of the emac screen is "shared on the external"

OSX running on the external mini VGA socket worked fine. But the internal VGA failed to run because it seems locked into 72 Hz and the LCD reported an error.

A big thanks to Leo Bodnar, with out his excellent how tos my emac would still be a very heavy paper weight

As we can see on this dvd supposedly has 13 movies of about 6GB that's 80GB! someone is telling porkies a a Dual layer DVD only holds 8.4GB Never mind We'll see what gives but clearly using

code: dvdbackup -M (mirror entire contents) is not a good idea in both terms of time and space. So.

code: dvdbackup -F

This will copy the main movie all 5.7GB about ten minutes on my old 800mhz ppc. Now this will play fine in mplayer, but this movie has a menu that will loop for ever.

This is the contents of the resulting VIDEO_TS directory

VTS_03_0.BUP 224K
VTS_03_0.IFO 224K
VTS_03_0.VOB 206 M
VTS_03_1.VOB 1024 M
VTS_03_2.VOB 1024 M
VTS_03_3.VOB 1024 M
VTS_03_4.VOB 1024 M
VTS_03_5.VOB 501 M

If we play VTS_03_0.VOB 206 M we will see that this is the looping menu, so I shall delete it.

This will make a single file called movie.vob put it safe. Then we can delete everything else.

code:
cat *.VOB > movie.vob

Now convert movie.vob into an avi or mkv etc.

code.

h264enc -2p -p hq

choose file and point it to you movie.vob and answer each question as it arrives (tip if you dont know the answer just keep hitting return)

Wait.............hours........ go to bed and in the morning your you'll have a nice ripped movie.avi or .mkv etc depending on your choices.
