Slowly but surely getting there. I'll probably remove mudguards and indicators, go with side mounted number plate now it's solo. Single seat motor cycles don't require indicators in the UK as they are usually off road bikes. I will add fork gaiters and may replace the headlight and if I sell the original pipes get a 4 in to one. I just discovered thats mud guards aren't required for Mot tests but are by law! The size is not stated so it will get some rather small mud guardskelsoohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07878571994325344522noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2515301842367133354.post-81083895273540568002016-04-06T10:46:00.001+01:002016-07-26T11:56:25.332+01:00The best desktop in the world tbdtitw

A Challenge: Try This Workflow

Yuri, have you tried this. If you do, let me know how it compares, because am pretty sure tiling windows manager isn't needed.

• set up 4 function keys to switch to 4 of your most used app. ⁖ emacs, browser, terminal.
I only need 1 click
• set up 1 key to switch to last windows/app.
I only need 1 click
• set up 1 key to cycle windows within a app.
not required after my setup is implemented. I either set window sizes per application, or scroll
• set up 1 key to toggle max/restore window size.
done but not required max/restore is not needed but occasional window splitting is included
• set up 1 key to close window.
done
• set up 2 keys to to switch prev/next tab.
I only need 1 function key
• set up 1 key to close tab.
done
• turn on auto-raise.
not required as I run maximized
• remove tiling manager.
not used
• set workspace to just 1.
No. Set to as many as needed. I use 8 by default because I group tasks via workspace/desktop. Browser and email are usually on the 1st desktop. torrents, server, mumble or utox on the 8th. The rest are used as needed but I rarely have more than 3 tasks on one workspace.

Try the following workflow for a week. I'd be interested to know if you still think tiling windows great.
• remove tiling manager. Use a basic, normal, one, such as xfce, lxde, openbox.
DONE
• set workspace/virtual-screen to just 1. (and remove the tens of related keybindings)
I SETUP 8 DESKTOPS AS PER DEFAULT
• set up 3 function keys to switch to 3 of your most used app. ⁖ {F8, F9, F10} for {emacs, browser, terminal, …}. 〔➤see How to Set Key to Switch to Browser for {Microsoft Windows, Mac, Linux}〕
FITTSTOOL
• set up 1 key to switch to last window, such as F4. (this is normally【Ctrl+Tab ↹】. In xfce, can be done easily. In lxde/openbox, the problem is that it requires pressing Enter ↵ to “exit” the switch, similar to releasing Ctrl.)
MOUSE IN TINT2
• set up 1 key to cycle windows within a app. F3. (trivial to do in xfce. Harder in lxde/openbox.)
I DON'T NEED TO MOVE WINDOWS
• set up 1 key to toggle max/restore window size. F1
TOGGLE IN TINT2 (BUT i DON'T NEED IT AS I RUN MAXIMIZED AND DON'T NEED TO ICONIFY WITH MY SETUP)
• set up 1 key to close window. ➳ for example: F6 (must be 1 single key. 【Alt+F4】 is not good.)
RIGHT CLICK IN TINT2
• set up 1 key to to switch prev tab, and 1 key to to switch next tab. (i use {F11, F12})
MOUSE IN TINT2
• set up 1 key to close tab. For example, the pause/break key. 〔➤see What Does SysRq/ScrLk, Pause/Break Keys do?〕 (note: the prev/next tab key, and close tab key, should be next to each other. If you are using a full-sized PC keyboard with numberpad, best to use / * - 〔➤see How to set Number Keypad as Function Keys {Windows, Linux, Mac}〕 )
MOUSE IN TINT2
•turn on mouse hover auto-raise window. (not just focus, but raise.) 〔➤see Mouse Hover to Auto-Raise Window〕
I DON'T NEED IT AS I RUN MAXIMIZED AND DON'T NEED TO ICONIFY WITH MY SETUP)
• ban double-click. 〔➤see Single-click Open File {Windows, Linux}〕
SURE IF YOU WANT TO

note, these keys should be single press key, not a chord.

which key to set really depends on your keyboard. (i'm assuming you are on a full-sized keyboard, not laptop, as you shouldn't type on laptop keys for long periods.) For a normal PC keyboard, the best keys are likely to be all function keys. but if you use any of the batman keyboards, you have a lot options, such as putting them on thumb keys.

If you do have a keyboard with extra keys, remove ALL keybinding that involves holding a modifier. Remove them ALL. Never press a key combination. 〔➤see Banish Key Chords〕

if you don't know how to set keys for items i didn't give explicit instruction, see:
The-best-desk-top-in-the-world (probably)

I prefer a stacking window manager (wm). That's not to say a tiling wm can't stack or a stacking wm can't tile be cause they can.

The issue I have with tiling wm's is they tile. Therefore depriving me of large areas of my screen. That in my opinion is a fail.

The issue I have with stacking wm's is they tend to expect you to iconify and raise or move and resize them. That in my opinion is a fail.

What I need is maximum window size while still allowing me to SEE what windows are open on which desktops.

I need a way to launch applications fast with out much thought. As the saying goes we use 20% of out applications 80% of the time. That's easy to solve. It's the 75% we use 15% of the time that's a challenge and the 5% of applications we use 5% of the time that we don't even know what they are that's the hard work.

I need a way to launch my commonly use applications and tasks and desktop setup automatically (autostart.sh in openbox)

I need a way to launch my commonly use applications and tasks without using a menu and preferably just one click. (fittstool)

I need a way to launch my less commonly use applications and tasks without using a menu. preferably just two clicks (bashrun2 or runner)

I need a way to launch my menus if I want them. I have 3 menus available. All of different types. Directory menus like rox-bookmarks and obbrowser, and openbox menu for utilitys. I have fbpanel menu for launchers should I need it but it's rarely even started.

I run 95%> of my windows maximized. Not full screen, maximized. I cycle between them via scroll wheel over tint2 or Alt-Tab.

I raise or lower windows in the stack as needed by selecting the application icon in tint2 or Ctl-F8. I have no need to iconify them.

I can should I need to display two windows on the same desktop/work-space by splitting the screen with windows either vertically or horizontally on the odd occasions it's beneficial with Ctl-F10 and Ctl-F9.

I base my desktop around tint2 and fittstool and require the wm to do very little.

What a window manager should do and why.
In reality I'm describing most of what I do with openbox and tint2 and fittstool already :-)
It's just that they can do loads of the things that make no sense to me as well

Able to be run with equal usability via keyboard and mouse

Be easy to configure via a well commented text file and have sane defaults

Config file can be reloaded during run time

Run all windows maximized by default (unless split or dialog boxes) so it's usable on all devices no matter what screen size.

You only need to open and close windows

Window decoration/tabs should be useful and not compulsory it's nice to switch them off on a per application basis or toggle them (I use alt-B for this in openbox)

Mousing over a icon/tab should show the contents but not switch to it (tint2).

Be able to set unmaximize for dialogs boxes and small applications like calendars and calculators.

Be panel/task bar aware and not cover an active taskbar

Ability to not display running applications in the pager or taskbar

Be able to show all open applications and their icon/tabs across all desktops. so the current active desktop is highlighted (see kelsoos tint2) Moving to a new desktop/workspace must not hide info of all other desktops or open windows

You should never need to iconify a window it make no logical sense. If your iconifying it's to see something that's hidden. Your not closing it so intend to return to it. You should just start what it's hiding because that just one action.

You should never need to move a window unless it's to another desktop. If your moving it's to see something that's hidden. Your not closing it so intend to return to it. You should just start what it's hiding because that just one action.

Resizing windows is rarely needed if you run maximized. I general if your resizing windows your desktop setup is failing. You should never need to resize a window unless it's a split window and that should resize the other split window.

Alt-Tab aware across all desktops so it shows all running applications

You don't need desktop icons (if your active windows are maximized you can't see them. Desktop icons are used to launch applications but it's not a window managers job it's a run dialogs, menus or launchers job. Closing or moving or resizing a window to launch an application is crazy.

I currently Drag n drop between windows via tint2. So if you have several windows open you can select something be it a file or text and drag it to another window via the tint2 across all desktops.

Be able to set a few pixel border for things like fittstool and desktop scrolling via the mouse.

Dual monitor support

Be copyleft GPL3/AGPL3 or later

My Dragora set up.

Note this project is a moving target, it gets tweaked almost every day and I update this post monthly at best.

This is old updated link is at bottom of the page

The Ultimately logically desktop experience that works from both the
keyboard and mouse equally well.

It been a long time coming but I think I have my desktop finally
sorted. As anyone in #dragora will know after a few hours of me
typing and correcting my typing I'm a raving dyslexic. I miss words
out swap letters around, fail to see some words and generally give
my fellow dragorians a hard time trying to understand me and me
struggling with their uber geek talk.

The upshot of this is I need a desktop that works via actions and
will never live in a terminal though after file managers and
browsers the terminal is probably my most used application.

With this in mind I set about fixing all the issues I have with
conventional desktop trying to reduce the wasted actions through
addressing each issue logically.

Issues:

I have netbooks and real-estate is in demand. So I wanted a solution
that worked across all my computers

Solutions:

Run applications maximised, all of them. Then I can alt-tab
through them or scroll via the mouse on the panel or keyboard.

Issues:

I need some way of knowing where my open applications are in
relation to other open applications without any action bar looking
at my screen.

Solution:

Run tint2 panel in such a way that each desktop looks like a tab
then the icon for each running application lets you know via a
glance where it is. To that end I don't auto hide my panel. I need
to be able to SEE time, date, CPU, Net, Battery with no other
interaction. I have 8 desktops by default with some
applications set to load on desktops 1 and 8 as this improves the
speed to check what's open. The active desktop has a different
colour border to hight-light it and the active application has a higher
brightness, again so no interaction apart from looking lets you know
which application on what desktop is active.

At all times all running applications are displayed. You can cycle
between all open application via alt-tab and cycle between all open
applications on a specific desktop with ctl+F8

Groups: I tend to group

Usually 2/4 items per desktop and them if I need to view more than
one application at a time I tile. split vertically, split
horizontally, split all.

I don't iconify
I don't have icons on the desktop

How much time is wasted moving windows to find a file?) I use a file manager to manage
files. One click in the top left corner opens rox ~/ via fittstool or a right
click opens spacefm (with numerous tabs open) or I click in a blank area on tint and I have access to obbrowser and
live scrolling to the file I want ~/ downward And my rox-bookmarks
in the openbox menu to navigate elsewhere.

Starting applications: fittstool, is used to launch all my
most used applications like file-managers, libre-office, browsers
etc, and do common tasks like volume control, lock screen,
brightness, log-out,

Run dialog: I use bashrun2, started via tint2, fittstool, or openbox keyboard short cut.

Software needed for this set-up:

openbox
tint2
oobrowser
obmenu-generator
fittstool
rox-filer
spacefm

more to come as it's not quite done cpu and net in tint2 ...

Also added desktop indicator with a view to adding add and remove desktop by adding run commands to the numeric icon

Done: adding and removing desktops by left or right clicking on the desktop number
It came through the bottom of the strut and scored my newish tyre!

These pics are with the car jacked up. When down the spring was stuck in the tyre.
I ordered a new one but when I came to fit it my spring clamps were to
short for the longer springs on my car! Nothing a bit of threaded bar

Then proceeded to add my welder axle stands and ramps to the ever increasing pile. Then decided she shouldn't have done it so tries cleaning the paint off with white spirit removing said paint. Dragorians please comment.

After looking as all the options many were rejected as to bloated and not in the spirit of keeping things simple and pure and nearer to the Unix way as we could. We decided to avoid GTK3 and QT5 at least by default. We decided to avoid systemd and all it's baggage.
Dragora users tend to make their system their own but we all have a similar desire to keep the system light, flexible and libre. In short non of the current developers or users would keep the default install, we all know what we want and can build the packages to make our perfect desktop or working environment.

We felt that the new D3 CD should be geared for ordinary users and try to use the one application for one job model. In a clean functional interface that would allow them to either just use it or help use make it better. If ordinary users have the bandwidth and higher spec computers and reguire higher spec applications they should add them from the repo or use the Dragora 3 DVD.iso.

Summary

The desktop will is aimed at ordinary users (Non technical)that want to run free-libre-software.
It aims to be light so it is available users with old low spec computers (512MB pentium4) as a base but usable on less.
It aims to be accessible for people with slow or expensive internet.
It aims to be easy to use for most common tasks.
It aims to be secure and offer some extra level privacy to the user.
It aims to try and avoid large monolithic dependences.
It aims to offer a good base for users wishing to learn to program.
It shall not use systemd.
It shall not use pulse-audio by default.

Notes.

I wanted to do a screen capture to show how my fittstool desktop worked, but I wanted to use free/libre software for the capture and the end product.

I found I could capture sound and video with this command

ffmpeg -f alsa -ac 1 -ar 44100 -i hw:1 -video_size 1440x900 -framerate 30 -f x11grab -i :0.0 -c:v libx264 -qp 0 -preset ultrafast `date +%Y%m%d%H%M%S`.mkv

Then I had to re-encode to a freer format that took ages and looked crap.

I tried using vp8 and after many attempts I got a reasonable webm screen capture. Running sound and video capture in the same command failed to grab all the sound but I discovered that running them as seperate commands worked fine!

I added both commands to a script and muxed them without the need to re-encode.

Capture screen and rename with date and time year-month-day-hour-seconds in a libre format.

##"capture-libre" script##

#!/bin/bash
## capture screen and rename with date and time year-month-day-hour-seconds in a libre format
ffmpeg -f alsa -ac 1 -ar 44100 -i hw:1 `date +%Y%m%d%H%M%S`.ogg &

ffmpeg -video_size 1440x900 -framerate 20 -f x11grab -i :0.0 -c:v libvpx -crf 10 -b:v 1M `date +%Y%m%d%H%M%S`.webm &

This will produce two files an ogg with the sound and a webm video both named the same and as near as damn it the same length.

Then killall ffmpeg to stop it! crude I know.

Now mux them in to one file, video with sound.

ffmpeg -i mux20151104112754.ogg -i mux20151104112754.webm -c copy -shortest mux20151104112754.webm

edit: I have since modded the scripts and now have a capture script and a stop-mux-clean-move script
As folks know I tend to run most applications maximized This is easy with some and hard with others Gimp 2.6 with it's multiple windows is one.
After a bit of searching and tweaking and using xprop I have it working as I need.
Work in progress but looking goodkelsoohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07878571994325344522noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2515301842367133354.post-79008061956056518612015-10-13T17:00:00.004+01:002015-10-13T22:01:30.818+01:00My Dragora DE screenshots

Work in progress. My usual candidates.

Rox as the file manager.

Openbox as the window manager. Takes time to set up but then stays out of your way. As I run maximized I really like the vert and horizontal split features and the ability to revert back to your single window mode with what ever window you like on display.

fbpanel as the fall back launcher via it's dynamic menu. I also use the mem, cpu, and network functions as constant visual displays. It also intigrates very well with tint2.

tint2 as the main panel. I don't use auto hide as it requires an action to implement so slows you down. Constant visual feed back is key to my desktop. I can access my minimal openbox menu from it with out affecting fittstool, run applcations maximized and drag n drop via tint2 like having the tabbed feature of pekwm but more flexible. It has superb integration with openbox, fbpanel and fittstool. It shows a small time and date and launces the calendar and a bigger clock.

fittstool as my default launcher. fast light easy to use powerful just needs a little setting up and learning.

All the above software have proven very stable for me. Some over a number of years.

I in effect build my own desktop environment. Each part interacting in a specific way with another. That's why they were chosen. For a feature or improvment that was lacking in how I wanted my desktop to function.

I'm still working on it, trying to make it more intitive and work better. But it's currently simple, stable, modular, light, and very fast in everyway.

Add a good file-manager like the brilliant rox-filer and set up it bookmarks and default launch settings along with all back up applications in the custom settings

The add and configure you favorite wm. Set it up so most windows are maximized

add a panel so you can have a visual que of running applications and add some workspaces. I have 8

Learn to love alt-tab or scroll via the panel to switch applications

I tend to use icewm with it's panel it has a built in run dialog

or openbox and tint2 and bashrun2

now count how many actions it takes to do something?

Most common ones are one click to the edge of the screen. The dynamic menu is one click and scroll. I have Alt-tab through setup to show all open applications rather than a menu as I find it faster once my fingers are on the keys to just tab down the open applications.

If you are using openbox be sure you setup split vert and split horiz settings for rox-filer as it's a single pane file manager. The a double click in the top right corner and a key shift to split the maximized windows either vertically or horizontally. The one feature that although icewm can do it it doesn't give you the ability to revert to the maximized state unless you only perform just one action,

The relevent part of openbox rc.xml obviously you will need to change for your own screen size.

If we think about it logically there is
not much sense in running small windows especially when screen real
estate is so important. Use your screen to the max. (unless it's
massive) but most screens are as small as we can get away with..

The problems with running maximized is
you can't see other windows

You need to know what’s running and
where it is The fastest way is to give you a small visual clue.
Hence we use a panel/tray/task-bar . It's small and need no
interaction at all. If you don't want a visible tray then it's 1
action away if on auto hide or a keyboard short like alt-tab

You need to know where to find
applications and be able to launch them fast.

Menus:

Menus are slow because you need to
navigate but easy as they give feedback

launchers:

Launchers are fast but use real estate
unnecessarily.

Keyboard Shortcuts:

Keyboard Shortcuts are fast but require
learning

Run dialogs:

Run dialogs are fast but require
knowing what to type

We use 10% of our available
applications 90% of the time so they are the one to concentrate on.

I use fittstool because I get the
benefit of launchers without the real estate loss and I only have to
learn the location of my most used applications it's easy to learn.
They’re just one click away and the target area is easy to hit.

The other 90% are 1 or 2 keyboard
clicks away via short cuts or 3 clicks away via a menu

This is all good until you need to use
a single pane file-manager like I do.

If I say want to move a file. I open
rox (top left corner lmb) navigate to the file. Select it and drag
it to it's destination via the home icon and either the up icon or
down through the directories. (you set spring open in options)

If I have many files to move my
solution is to open 2 rox windows (top left corner lmb click twice)
navigate to the directories then drag the file to the other rox
window via tint2 panel

In openbox I open 2 rox windows (My
choices in in speed order). top left corner lmb double click or via
ctl+r or from rox bookmarks (this has the added advantage of instant
navigation if you moving files) or from rox menu or run dialog or
openbox menu. When open I can thensplit the maximized windows via
ctl+F10 or ctl+F9 move the files and close the windows. alt+F4 is
fastest for multiple window closures as you already have you fingers
on the keys.

If running openbox I overcome the
missing cpu and network that I use in icewm by adding them to fbpanel
taking away auto hide and moving it next to tint2

The answer I hope is place the shower under the floor level. As I live in a "Walter Segal" house on legs this is not as crazy as it first sounds...I hope.

1. Remove rotten floor and joists

2. Except the loo! For now at least
